Previous Picture The leaf sprouts of the cherry tree. Next Picture
The leaf sprouts of the cherry tree are arranged on a branch according to a simple iterative algorithm where every sprout is placed 144 degrees apart (counter-clockwise) from the previous sprout. This gives an equal distribution of leaves on a branch in a pattern where every fifth leaf will point in the same direction.

Similar (but not necessarily identical) patterns can be found in distribution of sprouts of many trees and plants.
