Comments The largest members of a nearby group of galaxies. M81 is a 'face on' spiral galaxy about 11 million light years from the sun. M82 at the top of the image is a rather small irregular galaxy 12 million light years distant. A large scale formation of massive stars and subsequent supernova explosions (starburst) is taking place in the central part of the galaxy.
