Japan

Japan has according to the
table of Bailey Sorpio ascendant, and Capricorn sun sign. Japan is also
described in other contexts as an old country. One can see the
continuity of the unified central government in the office of the
Emperor, whose real power has waxed and waned through history but who
has always been regarded as the formal head of state (the Shogun was
also nominally a kind of minister or general under the Emperor). There
has never been an interruption in the succession, although there have
been pretenders. The continuity of the office was also basically the
only point of contention during the negotiations for unconditional
surrender in WW2, and the Japanese view prevailed.
According to the holy Shinto text Nihongi a clan leader called Kami
Yamato Ihare-biko set out to unify Japan in 667 BC, he is later called
Emperor Jimmu. He is supposed to be a descendant of the Sun Goddess,
whose grandson descended to Earth according to the text 1,792,470 years
ago from that year (while the number is not necessarily significant,
according to Bailey Sanat Kumara, the incarnation of the Lord of the
World, is about 2 million years old. Humanity as a kingdom of
nature is also the same age, since animal-men at that time were
equipped with the power of mind through the incarnation. The Emperor
could of course not possibly be a descendant of Sanat Kumara, as he can
only be in incarnation on the etheric plane due to his high level of
development. His incarnation is solely for helping the lower beings of
the planet, and is a kind of sacrifice as he must endure a lower plane
while learning nothing for himself from it).
The clan mentioned is generally believed to have been based in the
Western Island of Kyushu, and the invasion directed against the main
island Honshu since the direction of the expedition was East and
initally there is sea voyage. However it's also possible he could have
come from the Asian mainland (the text makes it sound like the land to
be conquered was more distant than just across a strait). After some fighting and adventures (at
one occassion getting the enemy clan drunk at a party), the Yamato
leader assumed the imperial dignity in his newly built palace on the
1st day of the 1st month in the year corresponding to 660 BC. While the text does have some
mythology involving interactions with deities, it was written
many centuries after the event and in my opinion this does not
necessarily discredit the basic story as scientific history writing had
hardly been invented. (In a similar way the god Mars and Aeneas of Troy
was mixed into the founding mythology of Rome for propaganda value.) A
central government seems to have been in place at least by a Chinese
account from the 3rd century AD, which mentions a queen ruling the
"country of Wa" (Japanese pirates in later centuries were called
"wako", as far as I know "ko" means invasion).
If one then assumes that the date of imperial ascension itself is not
fictional (the text also mentions precise dates for earlier events in
the campaign), the problem is that the event is traditionally assumed
to have occured at the Chinese New Year in February (which does not
give a Capricorn sun sign). However as far as I know this tradition
dates from the 19th century , when the Chinese lunar calendar had been
used the country (it was made a national day for propaganda reasons).
As far as I know the Chinese lunar calendar was officially adopted by
Emperor Jitou in 692 AD. What calendar was in use in 660 BC could be
suggested by megaliths at Kanayma, which function as a calendar
tracking the Sun's position from winter solstice to summer solstice.
Based on this I assume that the Nihongi text refers to the winter
solstice 661 BC as the new year day, and will see if the rectification
supports it. Obviously it should be detailed, since the date is
doubtful.
Hogen Disturbance, Jul 29, 1156
In
the 7th century a great reform program had begun in Japan, whose aim
was to create a bureacratic imperial government model after China and
eliminate the clan military system. About the same time the Fujiwara
clan came to dominate the imperial government by marrying the imperial
heirs to princesses of their own clan. Additionally it was not uncommon
to have an emperor to abdicate premuaturely in favor of an infant heir
who could be more easily dominated. However one result of the policy
was that imperial relatives who had no chance of promotion moved out
into the provinces, and there was also the possibility of dicontent
among princes who were passed over in the succession. One such incident
occured in 1155. Ex-Emperor Toba forced his son to Shutoku to abdicate
in favor of his infant son Konoe in 1141. Konoe died in 1155, however
Toba then forced the ascension of Shutoku's half-brother Go-Shirakawa
bypassing the son of Shutoku. When Toba died in 1156, Shutoku found
that there was no place for him at the funeral. It was the last straw,
and he called for samurai to support him in overthrowing Go-Shirakawa.
Samurai clans had developed partly from imperial princes who had moved
out into the provinces centuries before. Two such cases were the
dominating clans of the Taira and Minamoto. They formed the backbone of
the military system after reforms had failed to introduce a Chinese
style conscript army. The Minamoto had gained fame and power through
campaigning against aborigines and rebels in the East, while the Taira
had suppressed pirates in the Inner Sea area of the West (although they
were also originally based in the East). The clans divided their
support, with the bulk of the Taira supporting Go-Shirakawa and the
majority of the Minamoto supporting Shutoku. In a night attack the
supporters of Shutoku were defeated.
In the precessed solar return Day Lord Moon ruling the 12th house is
opposite Sun ruling the 1st. Moon could represent the disposessed
Shutoku, who attempted a sudden and quick coup. Sun rules the ascendant
and represent royalty in itself, but is not quite in the 5th and
that could indicate the disputed status of Go-Shirakawa. Both planets
aspect Saturn ruling the 6th of armed forces (the Sun has a stronger
relationship).

In the lunar return for the battle, the balance of forces in is favor
of the 5th house against the 12th house influence. Saturn ruling 5th is
in the 1st house is trine to Uranus, which is in the 5th quincunx to
Day Lord Mercury in the 12th. Saturn is also stronger (by being in the
1st house) than Hour Lord Jupiter, which is allied to 12th ruler the
Sun. Sun's aspect to Saturn could indicate that the forces supporting
the lawful ruler were not below using ambush tactics themselves (the
Shutoku camp had planned a night attack first, but abandonded the idea).

Heiji Disturbance, Jan-Feb, 1160
The Hogen incident had marked the
growing influence of the Taira clan leader Kiymoro at Court, while
several of the Minamoto leaders had been executed as rebels. He was in
alliance with certain Fujiwara, and began playing their game of
marrying imperial princes to Taira brides. While Kiyomori was away on a
pilgrimage Minamoto Yoshitomo (who had supported Go-Shirakawa and
therefore survived) in alliance with other Fujiwara decided to kidnap
Emperor Nijo and ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa and get Kiyomori declared a
rebel. However Kiyomori immediately returned and under the leadership
of his son Shigemori the Taira managed to recapture the emperor and
drive the Minamoto from the capital. This time most of the Minamoto
leaders were executed, with the exception of Yoshitomo's four sons who
were sent to be brought up by Taira (the eldest Yoritomo) or into
monasteries.
In the precessed solar retun, Saturn is Day and Hour Lord ruling the
6th house, square to ascendant ruler Merucry in 6th ruling the 10th,
and quincunx Pluto in the 10th. Pluto could here represent Kiyomori,
who engaged in power politics but was not a very good military man, and
Mercury in 6th other Taira while Saturn is the revolters. Mercury is
conjunct Uranus, it was through a surprise move while the Minamoto were
drunk that the emperor was snatched (disguised as a girl).

For the lunar return, exalted Jupiter in the 1st house ruling the 10th,
is quincunx to a cluster of planets in the 8th. Exalted Hour Lord Venus
ruling the 5th (the disguise of the emperor?) is trine to Saturn in the
6th. The Minamoto are perhaps the Day Lord Sun ruling the 3rd, after
the battle they were in the role of rebellious provincials as they
tried to escape to their home provinces. However the 8th house is also
itself nobility. (Pluto might here have caused a reckless pursuit by
the Minamoto against a feigned Taira retreat.)

Gempei War, May 5, 1180
In 1180 there was another disgruntled
imperial prince, as Kiyomori had entrenched his positions and forced
the resignation of Emperor Takakura and appointment of his infant
grandson Antoku as Emperor (this was such a naked power grab that it
was generally disliked). Prince Mochihito had been twice bypassed,
while his father ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa was in house arrest by
Kiyomori's orders. Together with Minamoto Yorimasa (who had defected
from the Minamoto in the Heiji incident out of loyalty to the emperor)
he issued a proclamation declaring the Taira rebels and usurpers. Next
to the capital of Kyoto there were the Buddhist monasteries
Enryaku-ji and Mii-dera, which maintained standing armies of warrior
monks and often fought each other or bullied the Court. The monks had
been offended that ex-Emperor Takakura made his traditional pilgrimage
to the Taira family shrine Itsukushima (perhaps to win favor) instead
of to their temples as was custom. The monastery of Mii-dera and the
Nara monasteries Kofuku-ji and Todai-ji decided to support Prince
Mochihito (but not Enryaku-ji because of the rivalry with Mii-dera).
When the northern rebels tried to reach Nara they were apprehended by a
superior Taira force and defeated at Uji river (after some heroic acts
by some warrior monks).
In the precessed lunar return Merucry is Day Lord ruling 9th and 12th.
It's quincunx by Pluto the esoteric ruler of the 6th (military
government). Pluto could also
have caused, that Kiyomori ordered the burning of Mii-dera. Hour Lord Saturn is in the 9th trine to
Mars in the 6th, which could be Enryuaku-ji's support for the Taira
(they had also recently received large donations). However ascendant
ruler Venus is in the 3rd opposite Pluto in the 9th, this kind of
3rd-9th opposition seems indicate general civil war for some other
countries. In this case the proclamation of the Prince had also reached
the eastern Minamoto provinces, and Yoritomo with brothers as well as
his cousin Yoshinaka raised armies (there were also revolts in the
Taira strongholds Shikoku and Kyushu in the West).

For the battle of Uji river, ascendant ruler Venus is in the 9th square
to 10th ruler Moon in the 6th. Neither is significantly stronger, but
the monk army was heavily outnumbered and overwhelmed.

Burning of Nara, January 1181
Kiyomori tried for a while to
negotiate with the Nara monasteries, but they were adamant. He also
began to be increasingly unstable with fits of rage (he was aware of
the betrayal of Yoritomo by this time). Finally in 1181 he lost
patience and ordered the thorough burning of the Nara monasteries. A
few months later Kiyomori died in a strong fever (believed generally to
have been divine punishment).
In the precessed solar return Merucry
ruling the 9th is opposed by Pluto, which trines Venus ruling the 10th
of government. Hostilities were postponed for a year, as there was
plague and famine which mostly affected Taira territory about Kyoto
(Sun in the 1st ruling 8th is opposite Saturn in detriment, ruling 1st
and 2nd).

Battle of Kurikara, June 2 1183
Minamoto Yoritomo's country cousin
Yoshinaka expanded rapidly from his base in Shinano in the North during
1182, to within forty miles of Kyoto. In 1183 the Taira resolved to
raise a huge army purported to number 100,000 against Yoshinaka (much
of it peasants forced into service). Kiyomori had been suceeded by his
son Munemori as Shigemori had also passed away, and he lacked both
military and political skills. Yoshinaka skirmished with the army
drawing it to the valley of Kurikara,. At night a flock of enraged oxen
was let loose on the Taira (together with the appearance of them being
surrounded), the Taira panicked and fled into the valley. There they
were surrounded and unable to escape or use their horses, and trampled
each other (according to the Heike Monogotari 70,000 died).
In the precessed solar return ascendant ruler and Day Lord Sun in the
6th, is quincunx to 6th ruler Saturn in detriment in the 1st house.

The overall theme of the year is military defeat for the "powers that
be" (6th ruler), in the lunar return ascendant ruler Mars is trine to
Day Lord and 12th ruler Jupiter suggesting tricky tactics. What Venus
in Taurus which Mars squares signifies, could maybe be the Taira
commander Koremori (who had been scared into retreat by
waterbirds at an earlier encounter in 1180).

Yoritomo against Yoshinaka, 1184
Yoshinaka entered Kyoto with
ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa as his imperial candidate (Prince Mochihito had
been beheaded after the Uji battle) as the Taira fled West. However
Yoritomo saw him as a rival equal to the Taira. In 1184 he sent his
brothers Yoshitsune and Noriyori to defeat Yoshinaka, whose allies
deserted.
In the precessed solar return, Venus ruling the ascendant is trine to
Jupiter ruling the 6th and Moon ruling the 10th, and opposite Saturn
ruling the 4th. It's possible Yoshinaka is represented by Saturn, who
was uncultured and whose army was little more than an unruly mob (4th
house) pillaging the supporters of both Minamoto and Taira when it took
Kyoto. Go-Shirakawa also switched to supporting Yoritomo.

Battle of Icho-no-tani, Mar 20 1184
The Taira had a number of naval bases
around the Inland Sea, one was Ichi-no-tani on Honshu. After Yoritomo's
forces had gained Kyoto (he himself stayed all the time in Kamakura in
the East directing the general campaign) it was decided that Yoshitsune
and Noriyori should attack Ichi-no-tani from two directions to prevent
the Taira escaping to the sea. Yoshitsune entered the base from behind
with a small force after scaling some neighbouring cliffs, but the
chief Taira managed to get away by boat with the Emperor Antoku.
In the lprecessed lunar return Day Lord 6th ruler Jupiter is exalted in
the 10th house, trine to Hour Lord Mercury in 6th ruling the 12th. The
Minamoto can probably be considered the de facto government at this
time, as they controlled the capital with their own imperial candidate.
Jupiter is quincunx Neptune, which is the esoteric ruler of the 10th
house in the 5th of royalty. Mercury is also opposite Saturn ruling the
5th (Antoku was still the legal Emperor, which is why the Minamoto
wanted to capture him).

Battle of Dan-no-ura, Apr 25 1185
The Taira had been routed
from their Shikoku stronghold of Yashima by Yoshitsune as well, without
much of a fight. Only their Kyushu base at Hikoshima remained in April
1185. Yoshitsune's victories had gained him the allegiance of several
seagoing clans, and the mountain-based Minamoto were able to field a
navy against the remaining Taira, which outnumbered them with 850 ships
to 400. Initially the weather favored the Taira and they concentrated
on capturing Yoshitsune. But then the tide changed and a contingent
under Taguchi Shigeyoshi defected to the Minamoto. This gave Yoshitsune
the location of the emperor, and all efforts were directed towards
capturing him. The Taira realized their cause was lost and committed
mass suicide by jumping into the sea (with the exception of clan leader
Munemori, who was captured and taken to Kyoto for beheading).
Saturn ruling the 6th in the 1st is quincunx to the Sun and Moon
in the 8th. The Day Lord Sun rules the 12th house, the 12th could
represent the lost cause which the Taira could be considered to
have become by this time. The defections to the Minamoto suggest
they were regarded as the winning side by this time. (That the 12th
ruler is the Taira is also suggested by that they attempted trickery at
this battle, by placing the emperor and high ranking Taira on smaller
ships instead of on big Chinese-style ships). Some alternative
interpreation could possibly involve Day Lord Mars in the 6th conjunct
Neptune (without knowing the charts of the clans involved the symbolism
is not always clear).

First Mongol Invasion, Nov 1274
Yoritomo had established
his government at Kamakura apart Kyoto, and he gained the title of
Shogun for himself and his descendants from Emperor Go-Toba. However
his persecution of relatives (both Yoshitsune and Noriyori were killed)
weakened his clan so that when he suddenly died in an accident he had
few male relatives and the clan Hojo could establish themselves
as Tairo or regents for the Minamoto Shoguns, with the real power.
Kublai Khan had conquered Korea by 1274, and demanded tribute from
Japan which the Hojo refused. In 1274 the Mongols sent an armada with
25,000 Mongols plus conscripted Koreans to invade Kyushu, but the
resistance was stronger than expected and they withdrew after fighting
as they expected Japanese reinforcements from other parts of the
country.
In the precessed solar return, Day Lord Mars ruling the ascendant is
square to Venus in the 1st ruling the 7th house (and Uranus in the 7th).

Second Mongol Invasion, 1281
Kublai Khan had subjugated Southern
China by 1281, and decided on a second invasion of Japan using both
Korean and Chinese fleets. The Northern force was something like 25,000
Koreans, Chinese and Mongols with 17,000 Korean sailors in 900 ships,
while the southern force was 100,000 Chinese and 60,000 sailors in
3,500 ships. When the fleets united off Kyushu in August, the Japanese
realized they would not prevail this time and prayed to the gods for
assistance across the country. The ex-Emperor petitioned the Sun
Goddess Amaterasu. On August 15 a typhoon gathered above the fleet and
lasted for two days, with the Chinese fleet losing more than half of
its men and the Mongols withdrew.
For the renewed invasion, Day Lord Jupiter ruling the 7th is in the 1st
square to Hour Lord Mars ruling the 3rd and 8th. Mars ruling the 3rd
and 8th could represent the Kyushu samurai who held off the initial
northern fleet and prevented any significant landing (Jupiter is lalso
in detriment).

For the typhoon or kami-kaze ("divine wind"), Neptune and Jupiter were
ascending in the area in the preceding eclipse.

In the preceding New Moon, Saturn is triggered by trine to the Sun and
Neptune by square to Saturn. Neptune is also trine to Pluto which is
triggered as well. The Mongols have been previosly been represented by
Venus in Sagittarius or Jupiter itself, their primary form of combat
was mounted archery so Sagittarius symbolizing them is not very
far-fetched. Neptune is on the other hand in the ascendant of Japan and
esoteric ruler of the 9th house, and could represent the Shinto
religion centered around the Emperor.

In the precessed transits Jupiter the planet of freedom was trine to
the Sun (ruling the 10th) and its dispositor, as well Venus ruling the
12th house (Jupiter was ascending in the eclipse). So a strong
collective spirit for preserving the freedom could have been possible,
leading to a collective act of invocation and subsequent magical result
(the planets themselves cannot favor anyone, their logoi are hardly
conscious of any Earth humanity with the exception of the Lord of the
World).

Revolt of Go-Daigo, September 1331
The Emperor Go-Daigo decided in 1331
to restore imperial power versus the Hojo Tairo. He had a loyal
samurai follower in Kusunoki Masashige, and he had also placed his son
as abbott of Enryaku-ji. The imperialist forces were besieged by the
government forces in the fortress of Chihaya for three years, while the
example of Kusunoki inspired other samurai and undermined the Hojo (at
one time it is estimated there was 100,000 besiegers against 2,000
defenders). The Hojo were not popular, as it was perceived they failed
to adequately reward many clans and temples after the mongol invasions
as was the custom (however as it was defensive no new land had been
gained which could be used).
On the prec. solar return, Day Lord Jupiter is in the 5th house ruling
the 9th (the Emperor was mostly a religious figurehead at this time).
It squares both Venus in the 8th and Saturn ruling the 8th. The 8th
could represent the samurai class in general. Jupiter is also sextile
to ascendant ruler Moon conjunct Hour Lord Mercury, Mercury rules the
12th which could indicate the limited initial support of the revolt
(Kusunoki had to conduct a desperate guerrilla war and Go-Daigo was
even captured and forced to abdicate), but Mercury is also quincunx
Saturn.

Overthrow of Hojo, July 1333
Go-Daigo had managed to escape
captivity and had more substantial support in Western Japan. Ashikaga
Takauji was sent westwards by the Hojo government or "Bakufu" to
suppress his supporters. However Takauji deserted to the imperial side
and captured Kyoto. Following that another samurai named Nitta Yoshiada
raised an army of disaffected soldiers in the East and descended on the
seat of government Kamakura (the defence had been weakened as many were
besieging Kusunoki). Following heavy fighting Kamakura was captured and
the Hojo regent committed suicide.
In the precessed lunar retrurn there is exalted Day Lord Saturn in the
10th square Mercury ruling the 10th, which could be the government
turning on itself. Saturn is trine to ascendant ruler Jupiter and the
Sun ruling the 9th (the Emperor as the religious figurehead). The
Emperor was not made absolute ruler overnight but depended on his
samurai supporters, however he failed to reward many of them properly.

Ashikaga Shogunate, 1336
Ashikaga Takauji was of Minamoto
descendent and had therefore a claim to the title of Shogun. He became
dissatisfied with Go-Daigo and hostilites erupted with the imperialist
Kusunoki and Nitta Yoshiada in 1336. Takauji was driven into Kyushu,
however there he gained the support of all the major clans and was able
to invade Honshu. He defeated the imperialists at the battle of
Minatogawa and established the Ashikaga Shogunate, based in Kyoto.
(However the successors of Go-Daigo and the Kusunoki clan maintained a
rival "Southern Court" for 56 years).
In this solar return, Saturn ruling the 5th is probably the emperor
(who had had time to consolidate his power, and was still the most
powerful Emperor for centuries while not the entire government). Day
Lord Mercury ruling 12th and 9th is square to Saturn. Mercury's
influence could possibly be seen, in that Takauji received a commission
from the rival of Go-Daigo ex-Emperor Kogon to suppress the rebel Nitta
Yoshiada. So his cause avoided any direct reference to the Emperor.
Hour Lord Jupiter ruling the 3rd house is square to the Sun, which
could symbolize the anti-royalist stance of Kyushu (that island was to
some extent apart from the rest of Japan and might be represented by
the 3rd house of siblings).

In the lunar return for the battle of Minatogawa, Hour Lord Saturn in
the 3rd ruling the 6th is quincunx 5th ruler Jupiter in detriment in
the 10th. Ascendant ruler Sun is also opposite Neptune in the 5th.

Onin War, 1467
During the Ashikaga the lords of the
country established mansions in the capital of Kyoto close to the
Shogunate (partly to enable supervision by the Shogun). In 1467 the two
most powerful clans were the Yamana and Hosokawa clans. The Yamana
leader Mochitoyo was called the "Red Monk" because he had entered the
priesthood and because he became red in color during his rages. The
leader of the Hosokawa, Katsumoto, was his son-in-law but his opposite
in character and a bitter rival. They had competed for power, and a
shogunal succession dispute in 1467 made open conflict possible without
getting the stigma of rebel. Kyoto was ravaged as the forces clashed in
house-to-house fighting for nine years. The Shogunal authority
collapsed, while the fighting spread to the countryside between allies
of the main contenders. Then it developed into a free-for-all general
power struggle called "the age of the country at war" (Sengoku Jidai).
In the precessed solar return Hour Lord Mercury ruling the ascendant is
conjunct Day Lord Sun in the 8th house. Mercury is the hierarchical
ruler of Japan's soul sign Scorpio. It expresses the 4th ray of harmony
through conflict, and it could be the Onin War initiated a general
conflict phase for the country (which led to a general harmony phase
under the next shogunal dynasty).

Sword Hunt, 1588
While the period of anarchy had many
memorable battles, they involved primarily the various clans and not
the country of Japan as a group. In 1588 Toyotomi Hideyoshi had
established himself as de facto ruler, with only the Hojo and Date
clans in the Far East not recognizing him. Since he was not of Minamoto
descent, he could not become Shogun and gained the title of Kampaku or
Regent from the emperor. During the period of anarchy peasants had
organized themselves into religiously motivated armies called ikko-ikki
or "single-minded league" who had participated in the fighting of the
samurai lords or daimyo. To prevent this for the future, Hideyoshi
resolved to collect all the weapons of the peasants with the pretext of
constructing a big statue of Buddha. In effect this meant a distinction
between the samurai and other classes, which was reinforced by a
Separation Edict in 1591 forbidding peasants to leave their fields or
samurai to become peasants (Hideyoshi was himself of peasant
background).
In the precessed solar return, Day Lord Venus ruling the 4th house of
the masses, is squared by ascendant ruler Moon in the 5th and by Hour
Lord Saturn ruling the 8th (nobility). It's also opposed by Jupiter
ruling the 6th (trine to Pluto in 10th).

Invasion of Korea, 1592
With the Hojo having submitted in
1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi decided to realize a long-standing ambition of
conquering China. Hideyoshi had for a number of years unsuccessfully
tried to persuade Korea to grant him free passage. However Korea was a
Chinese client state which emulated many of the institutions of Ming
China and refused. In 1592 32 daimyo were called to supply samurai for
an invasion of Korea, giving a force of 158,700 samurai with 100,000 in
reserve. During the first year they advanced to the Chinese border,
Koreans were not able to put up significant resistance against the
battle hardened samurai but conducted an intense guerrilla warfare
which disrupted supply lines. But more significant was the actions of
Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who defeated the Japanese navy and disrupted
transport lines to Japan.
In the solar return Hour Lord Jupiter ruling the 6th in the 6th, is
trine to Pluto in the 10th and quincunx 7th ruler Saturn in detriment
(also trine to Neptune in the 1st house). The 6th house seems to
indicate the samurai invasion (peasants were not allowed to carry
weapons even on this expedition, instead took care of transportation).

Admiral Yi's victory at Hansando effectively ended the planned invasion
of China as it cut off Korea from Japan. He used turtle ships (a kind
of ancient iron clad) equipped with cannons against the Japanese who
favored boarding tactics. (The Koreans had also gained experience
fighting Japanese pirates during the preceding centuries.) In the
precessed lunar return Saturn ruling the ascendant is in detriment in
the 6th house, quincunx by Jupiter which is trine to Neptune and Pluto.
Jupiter rules the 3rd house of neighbours (Korea) and the 12th house
(Admiral Yi used a ruse tactic drawing the Japanese out to the open
sea).

In 1593 Ming China resolved to send an
army of 43,000 to help Korea at the request of the Korean government
(the real intentions of Hideyoshi were also known). It succeeded in
capturing Pyongyang from the Japanese garrison. However the Japanese
concentrated their northern forces into an army of 40,000 at Seoul,
which beat back the Chinese-Korean army. However a failed assault of a
Korean fort caused such heavy causalties that Seoul was also evacuated
(the effective strength of the Japanese forces was down to 53,000 men,
from fighting, frost, beri-beri fever, cholera).
In the solar return Mon in the 1st house is opposed by Uranus in the
7th. Uranus also trines Hour Lord Mars in the 3rd house ruling the 3rd
(Korea was in a role of sibling or colony to Japan through the military
occuaption).

Second Korea Invasion, 1597
The Japanese had entrenched themselves
in Southern Korea while negotiating peace with Ming China. Hideyoshi's
demands included a Ming princess for the Emperor of Japan and the
incorporation of southern Korea into Japan. However the Ming's only
intent was to recognize Hideyoshi as the Chinese vassal King of
Japan (which was insulting to Hideyoshi and the Japanese). In the
renewed war of 1597 Hideyoshi's aim was to partition Korea and
incorporate the southern half. It was helped by the removal of Admiral
Yi from office due to Court politics. The main feature was a butal
subjugation of Cholla province, parents were slaughtered, fields burned
and children enslaved.
In the precessed solar return Hour Lord Venus ruling the ascendant is
in the 3rd trine to Pluto in the 7th. The war had not ended, it was
only a renewed outbreak of hostilities. In the Cholla campaign massacre
of civilians was regarded as routine military operation accourding to a
Japanese eyewitness (who likens the conditions of the campaign to Hell
on Earth). As food began to be scarce the Japanese peasants were driven
away and abandonded (and killed for the slightest mistake). Day Lord
Mars ruling 7th trine to Jupiter ruling 3rd could be the Ming's renewed
commitment to Korea (in 1598 there were 100,000 Chinese in Korea,
together with the Koreans outnumbering the Japanese for the first time).

Hideyoshi had ordered half of the invasion force to withdraw the
remainder of 64,700 men was to be fortified in a number of coastal
forts called wajo (the offensive was called off because Admiral Yi had
been recalled and threatened routes to Japan again). In 1598 the
fort of Sach'on was assaulted by a Ming army of 36,700. The Shimazu
clan of Kyushu was defending, and when a siege engine blew up they
counterattacked from the castle. The fighting continued until a
Japanese relief force arrived, and 30,000 Chinese were eventually
killed. In the precessed lunar return, Venus ruling the ascendant is
quincunx to Hour Lord Moon in the 7th. Venus is sextile by exalted 6th
ruler Jupiter, and sextile to 12th ruler Mercury (the counterattack was
unexpected and the Shimazu also adopted the stratagem of firing into
the civilians at the Chinese rear which caused confusion in the Chinese
army). Overall however the Chinese troops were more equal to the
Japanese than the Koreans, and they also had recent experience from
fighting Mongol rebels in Ningxia (but they lacked matchlock guns which
the Japanese had). The war weakened Ming China and Korea, and
contributed to their conquest by the Manchus 1644 and 1637.

Rise of Tokugawa, Oct 21, 1600
With the death of Toytomi Hideyoshi
the Japanese pulled out of Korea. He had instituted a complex system of
regents for his infant successor (in order to balance the regents
against each other). The most powerful was Tokugawa Ieyasu, and when it
became clear he had ambitions of his own Japan was divided into two
opposing camps for Tokugawa or the other regents. Although it has been
portrayed as a West versus East conflict, Tokugawa had allies on Kyushu
while the regents included Uesugi in northern Honshu. The armies faced
off at Sekigahara, Tokugawa's 74,000 against 80,000 for the regents.
In the precessed solar return, exalted
Day Lord Saturn ruling the 8th is oppsoite Uranus, which trines Hour
Lord Venus in the 5th. In my interpreation Saturn could symbolize
Ieyasu (who has Sun in Aquarius squared by then-dispositor Saturn).
Personally he was also a good administrator and stabilizer, ambitious
but patient. Venus in 5th could be the regents or Hideyoshi's heir.

Defeat of Hideyori, 1614-15
After Sekigahara Ieyasu was proclaimed
Shogun (since he was of Minamoto descent) and set about consolidating
his power by rewarding allies and punishing enemies. One tactic was to
keep the families of the daimyos as virtual hostages at his
headquarters in Edo. Hideyoshi's heir Hideyori survived, since there
was no pretext for getting rid of him (Sekigahara was formally against
one of the regents). In 1614 Ieyasu determined to move against
Hideyori, who was based in Osaka Castle. The losers under Tokugawa such
as leaderless samurai or ronin joined Hideyori, but all the daimyo
supported Tokugawa.
In the precessed solar return, Saturn
ruling the ascendant is quincunx to Jupiter ruling the 12th house. Hour
Lord Venus ruling the 10th of government is exalted and sextile by Day
Lord Mars. Mars rukes the 11th house, perhaps here the political
opposition which fell in line.

The Osaka siege failed, but through trickery Ieyasu managed to weaken
the defences. The fighting was renewed in 1615 when 120,000 men joined
Hideyori (including substantial Christian contingents) against possibly
250,000 Tokugawa loyalists. At the battle of Tenno-ji (the last battle
involving samurai armies) outside Osaka Castle the Hideyori forces were
defeated and Osaka Castle razed. In the lunar return for the battle Day
Lord Mercury is square to Hour Lord Mars in the 12th. Although I don't
know when Hideyori was born a conflict seems to be indicated. Moon
ruling the 12th seems to be an influence, and there were numerous
suspicions of treachery on the Tokugawa side (Ieyasu at one such time
contemplated suicide).

Shimabara Revolt, Dec 17 1637
Tokugawa Ieyasu had forbidden
Christian preaching in 1612, due to the provocative behaviour of the
missionaries (he was also aware of the Sapnish policy of religion as a
tool of colonization, through an English adviser). Hideyori on the
other hand had been advised by Jesuits, one of the reasons for
conflict. In 1637 a peasant revolt broke out in Shimabara, although the
revolters later took the cuse of Christianity the primary and original
cause was the tax burden. But it was significant as influencing
Japanese foreign policy.
In the precessed lunar return, Day Lord Saturn ruling the 4th house of
the masses is square to Hour Lord Jupiter ruling the 2nd hhouse.

Closed Country, 1641
In 1641 the Shogunate decided to close
off all foreigners from Japan, with the exception of Dutch merchants
who were allowed limited trading on the artificial island of Deshima
outside Nagasaki (But all crucifixes or Bibles were forbidden.)
In the precessed solar return, Saturn ruling the ascendant is conjucnt
Venus ruling the 10th house, square to Day and Hour Lord Moon ruling
the 7th and conjunct Pluto (colonial policy). One expression of the 3rd
ray of Saturn is separation. The policy caused financial hardships
which undermined the Shogunate.

Black Ships, 1853
Commodore Perry was authorized by
President Fillmore to discuss a number of proposals with the Japanese
government. Unlike previous foreign negotiations which had been
rebuffed in one way or another, he was to accept no insults or slights
and only talk to authorized represenatives of the government
(preferably as close to the capital Edo as possible). He had as his
disposal eight modern warships, and four particiapted in the first
visit.
Hour Lord Venus is in the 7th quincunx to Moon in the 2nd ruling 2nd
(economic policy). Day Lord Mars is in the 8th conjunct the Sun, ruling
the 11th and also opposite the Moon. The Bakufu or Shogunal government
took the unprecendented step of a public sounding of opinions among the
daimyo, it was seen by some as an admission of weakness. Mars ruling
the 11th house of the political opposition is also opposite the Moon,
there were some like Ii Naosuke and Tokugawa Nariaki who argued for an
aggressive policy of obtaining western technology and then resisting
the foreign powers. But even the most conservative admitted that
continuing a policy of seclusion had risks and some temporary
arrangement was advisable (the Moon is not well aspected).

Black Ships II, 1854
Perry returned with all eight ships of
his squadron in 1854, as he had threatened to do. The Bakufu reached an
agreement in the second visit which for proper treatment of
shipwrecked sailors and ports of refuge where ships could obtain coal
and supplies, the last demand of opening of trade was not agreed on.
In the solar return the 2nd house is no longer involved with respect to
the foreign influence, there is only an opposition from exalted Venus
conjunct Neptune in the 7th to Mars in the 1st. The absence of the 2nd
house could explain Perry this year was less inclined to press for
trade (but the treaty was unacceptable to commercial interests at
home).

Trade Treaty, 1858
The new senior minister of the Bakufu,
Hotta Masayoshi, had decided that Japan needed to become strong through
trade. He negotiated with the American ambassador Townsend Harris for
expanded trade without government interference. However he encountered
considerable opposition among the daimyo, and took the (again
unprecendented) step of turning to the Imperial Court at Kyoto for
support believeing it would be a matter of routine (threats and
bribery). At the Court some believed the Shogunate was weakening and
the treaty was opposed by Emperor Komei (the Court was empowered by a
Shogunal succession struggle inside the Bakufu, some members worked
through the Court for their aims).
This challenge was taken serioulsy by the Bakufu, which appointed Ii
Naosuke as Regent or Tairo providing more forceful leadership. He
forced through the treaty and suppressed dissent. The following year
the Court was made to fall in line.
In the solar return Merucry ruling the 1st and 10th houses, is sextile
to Neptune in the 7th house but quincunx by Day Lord Moon in the 9th
(the Emperor as a religious dignitary).

Assassination of Naosuke, Mar 24
1860
Naosuke had in effect become a
dictator, whose objective was to preserve the Shogunate. He purged the
Bakufu of those who had negotiated the treaties and stopped reform,
while still accepting the responsibility for signing the treaties. In
this way he became the enemy of both reformers and conservatives, as
well as those who opposed the Shogunate in general on behalf of the
daimyo or the Court (one particularly aggravating part of the treaties
provided that foreigners living in Japan were not subject to Japanese
laws, which was seen as infringing sovereignity). In 1860 Naosuke was
assassinated in his carriage by a group of samurai.
In the precessed lunar return, Day and
Hour Lord Sun is in the 5th square to 5th ruler Uranus in the 8th.
Although Naosuke was powerful, he was not the whole government instead
mostly the executive (he had been on his way to meet the Shogun). The
Sun rules the 11th house of the political opposition (it is possible
the samurai followed a rival isolationist Bakufu member, Tokugawa
Nariaki of Mito).

Bombardment of Kagoshima, Aug 15
1863
The country was slipping towards
anarchy after the murder of Naosuke, with the Bakufu losing control.
The daimyos of Satsuma on Kyushu and Chochu in western Honshu were the
leaders of the opposition to the Bakufu. They had succeeded in
reforming their economies and modernizing their military to a greater
extent than in the Tokugawa controlled domains, however as their clans
were on the wrong side at the battle of Sekigahara they had been
excluded from official government since (as Tokugawa Ieyasu assumed his
successors would be imbeciles, he had set up a rigid system of
government which was adhered to). As leaders of the opposition they
were also leaders of the anti-foreigner movement. Shimazu samurai from
Satsuma samurai had
killed an Englishman when he refused to give way to their procession
according to feudal custom, and an English squadron came to demand
reparations in 1863. When it was refused it bombarded Kagoshima the
capital of Satsuma.
In the lunar return Hour Lord Venus ruling the 7th house is quincunx to
Moon in the 6th house. Kagoshima was not defenceless and the British
squadron suffered damage, but the action impressed the Satsuma so much
that they ordered ships and training from the British.

Open
Revolt, Jan 3
1868
The nationalist minded middle-ranking
samurai had learned that sporadic isolated actions were getting nowhere
(they had attempted to seize Kyoto unsuccessfully). By 1868 they
instead worked through the major daimyo opposed to the Tokugawa, and
accomplished that the traditional rivalry between Chochu and Satsuma
was overcome. These domains also had modern armies with western
equipment, which were able to repel a Bakufu invasion. In 1868 Satsuma
and their allies seized control of the imperial palace and declared
they were fighting fo the emperor and that the Shogun was stripped of
land and offices (at the time however it was seen only as another
palace coup by one noble faction against another, not any imperial
restoration).
In the precessed lunar return, Venus
ruling the 11th and 6th houses is in the 1st house, trine to the Moon
on the 5th cusp, which is quincunx to Mercury ruling the 10th house.
Moon is also sextile by ascendant ruler Jupiter in the 3rd. Day and
Hour Lord Sun ruling the 9th house is quincunx to Uranus in the 7th
(the Court was the center for the anti-foreigner sentiment, many of the
nationalist samurai had established themselves there).

End of Shogunate, 1868
The situation for the Satsuma alliance
was not easy, most daimyos were neutral and there was the possibility
of disagreements (Ieyasu had also ensured that the Tokugawa and their
allies controlled the majority of the country income, although as
mentioned uneven economic reform had balanced it. But the Bakufu forces
still had a strength of three to one). As Satsuma and Chochu were
generally suspicious to the other daimyo and did not have the authority
to rule in the traditional way even inside their own domains, they
instead of choosing a new Shogun as the contemporaries expected turned
to the Imperial Court for governance in order to maintain broad
alliance.
It was not certain what the
Bakufu
would do in response to the coup (the new Shogun Hitotsubashi Keiki had
been the candidate of the reform party in the
earlier succession dispute).
But he agreed to give up his office and reduce his lands, although his
supporters the lords of Aizu and Kuwana on their own iniative attacked
the imperialists but were defeated by their inferior force. Most of the
other Bakufu lords yielded without a fight and the Shogun forbade
resistance, however Aizu had to be besieged by the imperialists.
In the solar return Sun in the 10th (Bakufu) conjunct Mercury
ruling the 6th (army), is quincunx by Uranus ruling the 11th of the
poltical opposition in the 3rd (Day Lord Sun could be veiling
Uranus). Uranus is sextile by Pluto and trine to Hour Lord Jupiter
ruling the 9th (Emperor) in the 11th. (Jupiter-Venus also squares
Saturn ruling the 10th in the 8th.) The government appears to be
generally defenceless against Uranus (the quincunx is a one-directional
aspect), although Pluto's square to the Moon also in the 10th could
indicate the isolated resistance.

Satsuma Rebellion, 1877
The men who eventually took over the
government were the nationalistic middle-ranking samurai who had first
manipulated the daimyo into action. They came almost exclusively from
the provinces of Satsuma, Choshu, Tosa and Hizen, and this "Meiji
oligarchy" dominated the Japanese government for the next forty years.
One member was Saigo Takamori, however he became increasingly
disaffected as samurai privileges were abolished and the daimyo domains
turned into imperial provinces. Samurai pensions were also cut by the
government, creating many discontended samurai who were unable to find
employment or start a business (the wearing of swords was also
outlawed). In the 1871 Saigo and others resigned from the government
over a dispute about a war with Korea (as that country refused to open
up as China and Japan had done, some thought a war could also increase
the power of Japan while others like Saigo advocated it as an outlet
for the samurai and the nationalists). After his resignation he had
become the virtual ruler of Satsuma and de facto autonomous. In 1877
there were a number of samurai risings and the government tried to
transport munitions from Kagoshima but the Saigo supporters pre-empted
it and Saigo was forced to led a march on the capital. However the
government raised a conscript army with modern weapons which defeated
the samurai.
In the prec. solar return Uranus is in the 1st house square Pluto in
the 10th, trine to Day Lord Jupiter ruling the 8th and 5th. However
Pluto is quincunx to Jupiter. Ascendant ruler Sun is in the 6th trine
to Hour Lord Moon in the 10th (the nation asa whole resisted the
samurai and supplied the government with an army). After this the
radical of the ex-samurai went underground and resortede to
assassinations of officials.

Constitution, Feb 11 1889
The government came to believe that
one useful channel for dissent could be the establishment of limited
popular representation. Ito Hirobumi had been responsible for creating
a constituion since 1881 and travelled to Europe in order to study the
institutions. However from the start he knew what he wanted and spent
most of his time in Berlin and Vienna. The Upper House of the Diet
included nobility, imperial family and persons appointed by the
Emperor. The lower house was elected by 1% of the population (as voting
rights was regulated by income). The ministers of the cabinet only
answered to the Emperor, who could alone declare war and make treaties
as well as adjourn the Diet. Some expenditures were outside the
jurisdiction of the Diet, however it was able to decide on new taxes
(but if it failed to pass a budget the adminstration could use the
budget of the previous year).
Nevertheless the constitution enabled the political opposition to put
pressure on the government by rejecting budgets (the Diet was dominated
by opposition men),
The adoption of the constituion was a low key affair conducted at a
private ceremony in the Palace (only persons who agreed with Ito had
took part in the secret discussions since 1881). In the lunar return
Day Lord Mercury ruling the ascendant is sextile to Hour Lord Moon in
the 11th house of legislative assembly (and sextile by Jupiter ruling
10th).

War with China, 1894
The government education policies
stressed loyalty to the Emperor and patriotism as a means of
accomplishing national unity. Newspapers were also censored in order to
entrench the official views. However the nationalism also took the
expression of colonial ambitions towards Korea. Ever since the Black
Ships some writers had argued for Japanese expansion in order to
strengthen the country. Japan's policy towards Korea after 1873 was to
win over Court factions in competition with China (Korea was still
regarded as the vassal of China). In 1894 revolts broke out in Korea
and the government asked for Chinese assistance. However this was seen
as a breach of an earlier agreement in Japan, which also sent forces.
Japan imposed as condition for withdrawal a number of reforms which
would in effect have removed the Chinese influence in Korea, which
China rejected. The modernized Japanese army and navy easily defeated
the Chinese and invaded Manchuria. Japan gained Taiwan in the peace
(and stronger influence over Korea).
For the solar return there is Mars in the 1st house, opposite
Neptune-Pluto in the 7th (which are trine to the third house).

War with Russia, 1904-5
Russia had with the support of France
and Germany pressed the Japanese to back down from claiming the
Liaotung peninsula in Manchuria from China. This was viewed as a
national insult in Japan. When Russia itself expanded into Manchuria
following the boxer revolution in China, Japan entered into alliance
with Great Britain (which also saw Russia in Manchuria as a threat) and
pressured the Russians to leave the province. The Russians had also
begun to intrigue in the Korean Court, reducing Japanese influence.
When the Russians delayed in response to the Japanese requests while
reinforcing their positions, the Japanese government decided for war
(it was more moderate than public opinion, and tried first to
negotiate).
Int he solar return Neptune the esoteric ruler of the ascendant is in
the 12th house, trine to Hour Lord Mars ruling the 10th and quincunx to
Sun in Aquarius in the 7th. The Sun could represent Russia, as Aquarius
is the soul sign. Neptune in the 12th suggest the way the war began,
with a surprise nightly torpedo attack on the Russian naval base on
Liaotung without a declaration of war.

The Japanese had superior numbers through the war, as the Russians had
only recently constructed the trans-Siberian railway and did not expect
war (it was also only one-way and had a break at Lake Baikal). The
Japanese navy of ironclads was also faster and more modern than the
Russian (which was split between Europe and Asia). The battles which
were on something like equal terms were the siege of the heavily
fortified Russian base Port Arthur on Liaotung, and the battle of
Liaoyang where one of the more able Russian commanders had entrenched
(with 132,2000 men and 400 cannon against 220,000 Japanese with 600
cannons). In the lunar return for Liaoyang Mercury is Day and Hour
Lord, exalted in the 6th and trine to Jupiter ruling the
ascendant. The Japanese staged many brave assaults on the
fortifications in this battle, which the trine could represent
(although the Russian army withdrew because of a failed Japanese
encirclement attempt).

Invasion of Manchuria, 1932
After the war with Russia Japan
annexed Korea and gained influence in Southern Manchuria. During WW1
the German colonies in Asia were taken. Regarding the direction of
expansion there were different schools of thought. Some though that an
alliance with China and Korea should be established while Europe was
occupied, to resist more colonialism. Others favored establishing a
Japanese Empire to defend the area alone. Still others thought a policy
of economic domination of China would make Japan strong enough. Due to
differences of opinion the Japanese policy was shifting. However when
the end of WW1 brought the League of Nations and other changes the
external threat became less urgent (Japan was also treated as one of
the Powers in the Versailles negotiations).
Internally the old Meiji oligarchy was dying away. The political
opposition to it was based on region instead of ideology, and focused
on gaining power over any principle. The politics became characterized
by backroom dealmaking instead of public or Diet debate. The
politicians also had close connections to big business, and were
generally regarded as corrupt which undermined their authority. Another
change was Communist ideas began to spread in the labor force, and the
conditions led to the formation of right wing societies aiming at a
second restoration. In the army there was discontent as the politicians
had begun compromising military strength in favor of their business
backers. China was becoming unified and nationalistic under Kuomintang
and Japan was regarded as just another colonial power. After the
general world recession in 1929 there were some attempts at military
coups, when they failed the Kwantung army instead invaded Manchuria by
own iniative in 1932. (Like in Germany some of the right-wing ideas
were inspired by Communism, like Japan representing the exploited
worker nations against the rich nations.)
In the precessed solar return Mercury is Day and Hour Lord, ruling 1st
and 10th. It's square by Uranus ruling the 6th (which trines Jupiter in
the 12th). Pluto is the esoteric ruler of the 7th, in hard aspect to
both (the government came around to accepting the army policy although
unconstituional and also to some extent unpopular).

War with China, 1937
In China Kuomintang leader
Chinag-Kai-Shek was about to crush communist resistance, when he was
kidnapped by one of his own generals. Chiang-Kai-Shek was forced to
agree to an alliance with the Communists against the encroaching
Japanese. When the Japanese military learns of this they provoke an
incident at the Marco Polo bridge near Peking and the war is renewed.
In Japan the government has tried to appease the military, which has
only led to increased military influence (with the power to approve or
reject cabinets).
Day Lord Mars is opposite Uranus ruling the 3rd house of neighbours in
the solar return (Taurus is the sign of China). Mars is 12th ruler in
12th. That there was not a commitment to full sclae war in Japan
can be seen from that the cabinet wanted a local settlement of the
issue (and also some of the High Command because of the threat from the
Soviet Union). But the field army acted indepndently, and the fighting
spread and developed into a war.

Appointment of Tojo, Oct 18 1941
The final capitulation of the
civilians to army control came in 1941, when General Tojo Hideki was
appointed prime minister. The preceding government had tried to
negotiate easing of American sanctions in reponse to the invasion of
China. He was more uncompromising and as negotiations failed war was
decided on. The appointment also led to military dictatorship (Tojo is
mentioned by Bailey as taken in posession by the Forces of Evil or
"Black Lodge" duirng the war for their own aims, along with Hitler,
Goebbels, Ribbentropp, Himmler).
Merucry ruling the ascendant and the 10th house is square by Pluto
implying a change of government caused by Pluto.

Attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec 7 1941
The eclipse for this event can be seen
in the USA chart. In the Japan chart, Mars was trine to Neptune in the
1st in the precessed transits, and Jupiter was in the 7th house
opposite Neptune.

In the lunar return Mercury ruling ascendant and 4th is in the 6th
house opposite Uranus and Saturn (Uranus could here be the USA, and
Saturn capitalism. One army ideologue described the operations in China
as the first step before a final battle with the leading capitalist
Power the USA).
Day Lord Sun is also in the 6th trine to Pluto and Mars, and Hour Lord
Jupiter ruling the 7th is in detriment in the 1st house which could
explain the success of the attack. (However it was not exactly planned
to be a total surprise, but the statement about breaking off diplomatic
relations was delayed by bureaucracy until after the attack.)

War with the Soviet Union and
Surrender, Aug 8 + Aug 15 1945
Japan tried to establish an Asian
"Co-Prosperity Sphere" and eliminate western culture. The internal and
external propaganda aquired a racial character not much unlike
Germany's (POWs were also mistreated), however as resistance was met
with executions and torture the scheme did not obtain any wholehearted
support (Malaysia and Indonesia were also under military control).
Japanese forces had skirmished with Soviets in some heavy engagements
involving armour in the 30s but had been bested, so they were wary of
joining Hitler against the Soviet Union (as Japan was also bogged down
in China) and managed to avoid such commitments although the Nazis
tried to push them into it (however the military leadership did have
plans for incorporating Siberia as well as India and Australia in later
wars). In 1944 Tojo was removed as premier after the allies captured
Saipan, and a cabinet 1945 tried to accomplish peace with the Soviet
Union as mediator. However the allies at the Potsdam conference issued
a demand for unconditional surrender and the Soviet Union invaded
Manchuria and occupied Northern Korea (as well as Sakhalin and the
Kuril islands).
The propaganda was directed towards a last stand on the Japanese
homeland, however the nuclear bombs changed the general opinion towards
surrender. The military resisted, but the emperor caused the acceptance
of the preservation of the status of the emperor as the only condition.
In the lunar return ascendant
ruler Jupiter is also in detriment squared by Venus in 7th. Day Lord Mars is in the 6th ruling the 12th
house and square to exalted Mercury ruling 10th and 7th. This could be
a last-ditch conspiracy by army officers to destroy the emperor's
recording of the surrender by breaking into the palace (it was not
found). The War Minister and others committed suicide outside the
palace.

Hijacking of Japan Airlines
Flight, Mar 31 1970
Japanese politics in the postwar era
resembled that of the 20s, as the
country was most of the time a one-party state with the Liberal
Democratic Party in charge. There were again close ties between the
government and big business interests, this time with bureaucrats in
the middle. Factionalism and power politics within the ruling party
to some extent replaced ideologically inspired public discussion.
The
opposition to the Liberal Democrats (created by merger between the
Liberals and Democrats) consisted mainly of the Socialists and
Communists.
As the opposition Socialists came to believe that they could never
gain power other methods of pressure like obstructing Diet procedures
and strikes and demonstrations were used. The more radical elements
resorted to
terrorism, an offshoot of the Comminusts called the Japanese Red Army
was active in the 70s mostly abroad, but the first act was domestic in
1970.
In the precessed lunar return for the
hijacking Day Lord Mars ruling the 12th of clandestine terrorist
operations is opposite to ascendant ruler Jupiter (Mars is in
detriment, which might explain that the passengers were realeased and
it was flown to North Korea).

Resignation of Tanaka, Nov 6 1974
There was also a close
relationship between money and politics in the LDP system, as when
Prime Minister and former businessman Tanaka Kakuei was forced to
resign because of public corruption allegations exceeding even Japanese
standards.
In the lunar return Moon ruling the ascendant is opposed by a cluster
of planets in the 4th house when his government resigned (before the
Diet commission created by his LDP rivals began calling witnesses).

Aum Shinrikyo attack, Mar 20 1995
The cult releases sarin gas into the Tokyo subway system killing dozens
and injuring thousands.
The Sun rulinh the 12th house is Day Lord in the 6th, square to Hour
Lord Jupiter in the 3rd (transportation). Jupiter rules the 4th house
of masses (4th + 3rd could be underground transportation).
