Lihasula Finnsheep - top Finnsheep breeding

Lihasula Finnsheep is the only approved breeding farm in Finland that is specialized in white Finnsheep.

Sheep breeding started in Lihasula in 1992. Our lamb weights per sheep have been among the top three in Finland almost every year since that.

We have about 120 sheep and 10 rams that give us nearly 300 lambs every year. Ten percent of them are used in breeding or sold to other farms in Finland. Some lambs have also been sold to Italy and we have also sold some sperm to the USA.

Most of our lamb meat is sold on the Helsinki market. A small part of the lambs are slaughtered in our own slaughter house. Their meat is sold in the local market.

We make our breeding choices using ultrasound scanner for measuring the back muscles of the lambs. Our goal is to develop their musculature that way. Other important factors we value in breeding are the health, endurance and body structure of the lambs. Special attention is paid to the relation lines in order to keep the breeding base broad enough. The average weight of female sheep is 90 kg. The rams weigh approximately 100 kg.

Finnsheep (or suomenlammas in Finnish) is the original sheep breed of Finland. It is probably the most fertile breed in the world. Its meat makes a healthy low-fat dish and its soft and curly wool has a beautiful shine.
