LIVING STONE FROM FINLAND
Spectrolite, quarried from the bedrock of Ylämaa.
Ylämaa municipality in South-Eastern Finland, is the Finnish stone best fulfilling the requirements of gemstones: beauty, hardness and rarity.
What makes spectrolite so fascinating is its endless play of colours and hues: they vary in all the hues of the rainbow and reflect the shades so characteristic of Finnish nature: from golden shades of brown to the deepest blue.
This "Living Stone" was found in Ylämaa during World War II in 1940, when building a defence line, the so-called Salpa-Line, along Finland eastern border. The first crystals were spotted in rocks used as tank traps. After the war, large-scale quarrying started little by little in the 1950s.
Lapidary experts rank Finnish Ylämaa Spectrolite the most beautiful of the Labradorites in the world. Indeed, its rich beauty and great variety attract a universal response and it is in great demand all over the world.
