Guestbook 2004

I'm Just A Lonely Guy & I Don't Know What You Got are my favorites. The first record I bought was Long Tall Sally back in '57. Richard always kicked. I saw him in Dallas on New Years Eve with Chuck Berry in 1966 I think. In the middle of the gig, the drummer's bass drum caved in. Richard was not pleased.

Dear Sir: You were very kind to allow me to shake your hand in the Nashville airport on Friday, November 26. I was in shock when I recognized you; I am quite sure I asked permission to approach you; nevertheless, I respect your privacy and hope I was not too forward in approaching you with my hand out hoping for a handshake. You made my day! It takes a very special person to achieve legendary fame and yet take the time to shake the hand of a fan in an airport. God Bless you, man.
Mark Hohmann 2004-12-07

Wolfgang Guhl 2004-11-30

Hi! Thank You for trying something new and being proud of it! Is it true what I have heard, that You used to go to an Adventist church when You grew up? In that case I am impressed! Its true what You have said - that young people want their own music, this is an issue we are dealing with in church. We have re-planted an Seventh Day Adventist church and the kind of music You made in the fifthies are still too radical for most of the churchmembers now in 2004. You can maybe imagine our "struggle" to be able to praise God in a way that we feel natural. We need some joy in our praises and I am very fond of the joy you black people are able to show in your praises. So when You did the joyful "Tutti frutti" instead of the blues you opened a lot of minds and I am very thankful for that.I have read today that You are coming to Langesund (Wrightegaarden) June 18. next year, this is a saturday and it would be an honour to have a sermon in english for You.We have named this ch!
urch"project" Åpen Dør (Open Door)and it is located about 15.minutes drive from Langesund. You are most welcome  :)  Greetings from Åpen Dør in Norway!

I LOVE THE MUSIC OF L RICHARD, BUT AS I SAID IN ATLEAST ONE PREVIOUS GUESTBK ENTRY, WHO THE "KING" IS, IS A MATTER OF OPINION & PERSONAL TASTE;ACTUALLY, FATS DOMINO & BILL HALEY HAD HIT SONGS OUT BEFORE L RICHARD & ELVIS;BUT IF MR PENNIMAN'S THE "KING" TO YOU, THEN, THATS ALRIGHT.THEY ALL CONTRIBUTED TO R & ROLL HISTORY & ARE TALENTED/GIFTED - SO DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHO THE "KING" OF IT IS?
DANNY B. 2004-11-15

It's about to be released early in 1995. 45 years in the making. Made for the fans by the fans. LITTLE RICHARD:THE ORIGINATOR OF ROCK. This day-by-day book tells all about the true King of Rock 'n' Roll. If you're a fan who wants to know all...this is it! Private production. It's huge!Further details will emerge.
Paul MacPhail 2004-11-15

Timo:  Further to my Nov. 8 writing, I need to correct a couple of things.  1. Dick called Little Richard the model for almost every rock n roll singer of the fifties and years thereafter.  2. Jimi Hendrix said that he wanted to do with his guitar what Little Richard did with his voice.  3. Elvis said that Little Richard's music inspired him.  Sorry for the errors in the previous message - I, too, make mistakes now and then.  Keep up the great work on the site, Timo.
Rob Donison 2004-11-12

Artist, such as yourself, and Chuck Berry are the only reason I made it through the 1950s. I later became a musician myself. I could NEVER thank you enough. I'll always be greatful! Lewis E. Edwards

hello little richard, i was wondering if you where ever coming to florida, me and my friends  would love to see you in concert, the last time we saw you was back in the 1980s, that was in madison square garden, n,y c. so one of these days hopefully we can see you in clearwater,or tampa, god bless you, and keep playing  the songs we love to listen to. mattbeebop@yahoo.com

I am a BIG fan. I used to hear you sing on WINS, N.Y.C. in the mid fifties. I am 65 now and I still love your music. charles nixon

Channel 4 TV, in UK last night 11/07 had a program last night to choose who is the viewers' favourite artist of the 1950s. Very tough choice until Little Richard appeared. I picked up the phone immediately and registered my vote!
Nick Allison 2004-11-08

Timo: I largely agree with what you wrote (Oct. 4). A few additional comments: According to James Brown, who called Little Richard his idol, Little Richard's recordings were the first to inject 'funk' into rock n roll. His raspy shouted vocals were pivotal to the development of the rock vocal, and he was the first to make the scream before solos famous in music - not to mention his high pitched "whooos". Ray Charles in Rome, Italy (circa 1990) introduced Little Richard on video (The Legends of Rock n Roll) as the man who started a kind of music that set the pace for a lot of what's happening today. Dick Clark introduced him as the inspirational for almost every rock n roll artist of the 50's and years thereafter. Jimi Hendrix said that he wanted to do with his voice what Little Richard did with his guitar. Smokey Robinson said that Richard was the start of that driving, never let up rock n roll. Elvis called him the greatest and said that his music inspired!
him (listen to the vocal in 'Jailhouse Rock'.) Elton John, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Mick Jagger, Bob Seger and many other later rockers also have stated on the record the level of Richard's influence on them. I am thankful God inspired Little Richard with unique, pivotal contributions to the music that we so love and appreciate.

respose to j cavan:u said l richard was the first to bring "real singing" to r&r;to me, thats a matter of personal opinion;it depends on who u like & dislike & ones definition of "real singing".i feel other famous singers in this guestbook also brought REAL SINGING to rock n roll music;they all, like evryone, has their own unique style mixed with our own individual personalities & gifts & talents;as far as wildness goes, to me, jerry lee lewis was & is not only multitalented/gifted (not only the piano)but im not aware of anyone setting pianos ablaze during a concert prior to him;they're all talented;barbara mandrell & roy clark can play ANY instrument known to man & play em well & lets not forget jerry lee's two cousins mickey gilley (very pianofied) & jimmy swaggart who can play such heavenly beautiful anointed gospel music with the piano as few can.
danny  bauer 2004-10-13

in response to j cavan:NOT ONLY LITTLE RICHARD, BUT OTHERS HAD STAGE ANTICS-C BERRY:DUCK-WALK, E PRESLEY:PELVIS-SWIVELING, JERRY LEE LEWIS:SETTING PIANOS AFIRE
danny bauer 2004-10-11

Little Richard will been the legendary of rock and roll.1!!
David Markovic 2004-10-10

This may not be too relevent but in response to Wolfgang's response aside from the stage antics little richard also bought real singing to rock and roll, THAT had never been done before.
Josh Cavan 2004-10-09

IN REPLY TO WOLFGANGS COMMENTS:I AGREE WITH U ALL BUT ONE THING;TO SAY THAT NO ONE HAS HAD THE MUSICAL INFLUENCE AS MUCH AS CHUCK BERRY IS FEEL IS INCORRECT;ELVIS PRESLEY HAD/HAS ATLEAST AS MUCH AS MR BERRY, I THINK THATS OBVIOUS;I DONT KNOW IF MR BERRY APPRECIATED ELVIS BUT ELVIS SANG MR BERRYS SONGS, ATLEAST SOME;IMITATION IS THE BEST FORM OF FLATTERY - ISNT THAT A SAYING?BUT THEY ALL CONTRIBUTED TO MAKING ROCK N ROLL WHAT IT IS & ALL THOSE PEOPLE WERE PIONEERS & TALENTED.TO SAY WHO'S THE KING OR THE BEST OR WHATEVER, ISI THINK A MATTER OF OPINION & WHAT WE LIKE OR DISLIKE IS LIKE, SOME PEOPLE LIKE MCDONALD'S & SOME PREFER WENDY'S (POOR ANALOGY)
DANNY BAUER 2004-10-08

@ Timo:Exactly, that's what I wanted to say. There is no "most influential artist", they are all great in their own way and they started Rock'n'Roll together. Neither Richard nor Chuck did invent Rock'n'Roll on their own, they did it together with Fats, Bo, Jerry Lee, Elvis and several others. So I agree 100 % with what John Smith said.
Wolfgang Guhl 2004-10-05

To Rob and Wolfgang: Chuck and Richard are undeniably the most influential rockers of all time. "All" singers that came after these two, tried to sound like Richard, "all" guitarists tried to play like Chuck, "all" bands tried to rock like Richard's band, and everybody was doing songs of both. In addition, Chuck may have inspired more lyrics writers than anyone else. Because their strong fields are not competing, they are both most influential.
Timo Reijola 2004-10-04

@ Rob Donison:Just compare the amount of artists which mentions Little Richard as their influence to those who mention Chuck Berry as influence! When it comes to influence, Chuck Berry is definitely the most influential of the 50's rockers! Even Bo Diddley, who you call "a true rock original" often states that he and Chuck Berry were first. As a piano player I would say that Jerry Lee Lewis is far superior to Little Richard. So is Fats Domino.Little Richard set the standard for make-up and wild on-stage behaviour and his screams influenced Paul MacCartney and others.Little Richard may be the "prototyp" of a Rock'n'Roll star, but when it comes to MUSICAL INFLUENCE, nobody matches Chuck Berry. Just compare the amount of classic songs Chuck wrote to Richard's. Just compare the amount of Chuck Berry covers to Little Richard covers. Even Richard plays Chuck's "Rock'n'Roll Music" and "Roll Over Beethoven" from time to time. Chuck never does songs of Little Richard or Jerry!
Lee Lewis in his set. Think about it.So, better check the facts before you call others "uneducated".
Wolfgang Guhl  2004-10-04

hi ive seen little richard on a live dvd singing a song called no place like home,if any one knows if it his oringal song? if not who performwd it orignaly? please email me thanks
daz reject 2004-10-04

John Smith in His September 20th message indicates there were artists before Little Richard that made 'great inroads'. I don't dispute this, however, Elvis was not really a 'musician'/'songwriter' and copied Richard's raspy, shouted vocal for hits like 'Jailhouse Rock'. He even claimed that Richard was the greatest and an inspiration to him. Chuck Berry whispered vocals in comparison with Richard's holler, nor did he personally have the same degree of influence in the development of many elements of the music that Richard did. There were other artists around but none blew the lid off like Little Richard. Had it not been for racism in America, Richard would likely have been known at the time as 'the King'. And if one looks to where it all really came from, the greatest influence on Richard came out of the black Church with artists like Mahalia Jackson and Sister Rosetta Tharpe (from the 30s forward). (If you want to hear pioneering rock guitar work, then check!out Sister Rosetta's recordings (ex. 'Down By The Riverside' and 'This Train', etc.). She is long overdue for the Rock Hall of Fame. Finally, Bo Diddley as a true rock original, needs to be constantly highlighted in the area of guitar work. After all, he, like Richard, came up with unique music. It is true that there are many opinions around, but many uneducated people with opinions, as well.

GLADYS HORTON STATES THAT LITTLE RICHARD IS THE "KING";THATS A MATTER OF OPINION;THERE WERE MUSICIANS BEFORE MR RICHARD THAT MADE GREAT PIONEERING INROADS SUCH AS ELVIS, BILL HALEY, FATS DOMINO, CHUCK BERRY;BESIDES, TITLES LIKE "THE KING" ARE NOT ONLY OF ONE'S OPINION, THEY'RE SILLY BECAUSE WHAT DOES IT MATTER ANYHOW?THEY AL MADE GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS TO WHAT BECAME KNOWN AS "R & ROLL MUSIC".
JOHN SMITH 2004-09-20

Little Richard will always be the king, his career opened the door for so many in this industry. He is truly a pioneer of our industry, and deserves the credit that is due him by many who have forgotten that he is indeed "the pioneer" of rock and roll music as we know it today. With respect and love,Gladys HortonFounder & Original VocalistTHE MARVELETTESMotown Records Artists1960-1970

Hey Little Richard! How are you? You are turning 73 years next year and i wonder how it's been a amazing road for you. Starting in 1955 with "Tutti Frutti" skip 2 years and we come to 1958 with "GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY" your famous hit ever. I hear you retiring this year or next. What you thinking man? i mean, after 50 years of performing i'm sure your body can't take it anymore but it's crazy and i feel you should perform for the next 10 years. My solution, go out and buy the Q-Ray Ring(it fits around your wrist and takes away the pain and anguish in your body)so you can be ok. You've seen everything there is to see. What was it like back in the 1950's, i mean, was is it like fun times or bad times, great livings or bad surroundings, let me know o.k? Do you have a mail address? let me know and i will send you a nice, relaxing letter(nothing dirty or anything) O.K.? Hey richard! I must say that you are rock'n'roll! Some people say like what is that crazy old man doing-I think you've changed history of music. The problem today is that there are so few rock'n'rollers out there and all kinds of techno and trance music is too popular. I have a band too but it's a struggle to get something recorded. And there are like only 50 people in contcerts. I just can't understand whatever happend. OK. You have a great life. Love, peace and rock'n'roll

Jan Athmer - your mistaken, Huey "Piano" Smith played only on the tracks when Little richard was first recording at specialty, They got Richard to play on tutti frutti and every track after that.
Josh Cavan 2004-07-07

SOME TIME BACK I STATED THAT JERRY LEE LEWIS WAS BEFORE LITTLE RICHARD;THATS PROBABLY AN INCORRECT STATEMENT;REALLY, IT DOESNT MATTER WHO IS OR WAS THE "BEST";THEY WERE ALL GREAT R & ROLLERS & AWESOME MUSICIANS!! HOPEFULLY AS WELL THEY WERE ALL GREAT FRIENDS OF EA OTHER & HOPEFULLY, IN 2004 & 2005 & ON, L RICHARD, JERRY LEE LEWIS, AND CHUCK BERRY WILL DO "TRIO CONCERTS" TOGETHER ACROSS THE USA! THAT'D BE FABULOUS!WOULDNT IT BE GREAT IF FATS DOMINO MADE SOME SURPRISE APPEARANCES!?!?Danny - Northern Kentucky Area (Near Cinti, OH)

Hi all! Want to remind you all to join the Little Richard fan-group on Internet - the only place for LR-fans to talk, chat, show concert-photos, let LR-fans know eachother etc. I see there are so many people signing this guestbook, then people don't know who you are. I think it's so strange that not more than about 20 people have joined the group. So, please all Little Richard fans and people interested in his music, please join the fan group. Go to the "links" -sektion on this site, then choose the button about this fan-group. Remember, the same group but Jerry Lee Lewis has about 200 members, and Little Richard is as same great artist as Jerry Lee Lewis. JOIN! Best regards to you all, Mattias Bruhn

I'm Luis Enrique, and I love Rock'n'Roll. And I think that Little Richard is one of the best songwriters in the world.I'm only 27 years old, but I love Long Tall Sally, and all the rest of the songs.
Luis Hermosillo 2004-06-10

I watched the movie about your life last night on BET network.  It was very interesting.  It's a long way from Macon, GA. to where you've come.  My parents were both from Georgia; my mom from Vidalia and my dad from Moultrie.  I have been through Macon and have heard many things from my parents about what it was like to grow up in rural Georgia.  I noticed that you appeared in Mobile, AL. early in your career.  I know you also came here a few years ago for Bayfest.  I love your music.  You truly are an American original...Hope that you will be coming back here or nearby again soon.  Best of luck to you!  Don't ever retire:~)Angela Strickland
Angela Strickland 2004-06-08

When I first heard "Long Tall Sally" in England in 1959,I got chills up and down my spine. I had come from America, but didn't know Little Richard. (I was too young for rock & roll). One day I was at a friend's house and his brother said he had a record he wanted me to hear, because it was sung by an American. After it finished I asked him to play it again. And again. We played it half the night. It was a 78 rpm record. We nearly wore it out. I just couldn't get over that sound.Where could one write to Little Richard? I would like to tell him how much his music has meant to me through the years. Even today, when I have flashback's from my experience in Vietnam, I can play, "Tutti Frutti", or "Long Tall Sally", or "Ready Teady", or "The Girl Can't Help It" and it takes my mind off the bad memories, the death and destruction, the loss of many of my buddies. It takes me back to a simpler time, to a time when no-one had ever heard of a place called Vietnam. In my opin!ion, Little Richard, like Elvis Presley were both gift's from God to the world. One black, one white, but in music there is no race. Just like in Vietnam, you depended on your buddy regardless of his color.I just love this guy from Macon, Georgia. I always have and I always will. Bill Urban

Hi from Melbourne Australia! I am a huge fan of yours and have loved rock 'n roll music all my life. You are truly one of the greats!! I love your style and the energy you put into your music, it's amazing!! My only regret is that I never got to see you perform live (I believe you were originally meant to tour with the Legends of Rock Show here in Australia in 1989, but didn't end up coming - it was a great show, but not the same without you)!! You **are** rock 'n roll! God bless and keep rockin'!!!

Dear Little Richard: I just wanted to write and say "hi". My husband Doug and I had you as our special guest at our church in Decatur, Illinois in the years of 1980 and 1982. Our church is Maranatha Assembly of God located in Decatur, IL. I saw in our newspaper today that you are going to be at the Kirkland Auditorium at Millikin University here in Decatur in the month of September. We would really love to be able to see you and visit with you. We cherished our friendship with you and have wonderful memories of our time together visiting with each other. Our 3 children are grown and I know they would love to see you as they have wonderful memories of you being with our family. We would love to hear from you and are praying that it possibly could happen. God Bless! Your friends in Decatur, Illinois--Pastor Doug & Rosemary Lowery

Dear Little Richard, I first started dancing to your songs with my dad, aged two, I'm 36 now and my dad and I still dance and sing to your songs. My dad has loved your music since the age of 15. The times I walked home from school as a child and could hear your songs 60 houses away, and I knew my dad was home from sea, the neighbours thought my dad was crazy. You have a gift, thanks for sharing it. God Bless. Tracy

Hi! First I want you to know that I enjoy your music and I love you so much. My real point for coming to you site was to share a little something with you about my self and a someone I know and you may know to if you think back long ago. I wanted to know if you remember a lady name Natallie form back in da days when you was coming up. I don't know what her last name was back then, but Im her grandchild and she use to tell us that you and her use to date back in da days when you and her was coming up. Well if this is oh so true I would like her hear from you. It would mean so much to me because my grandmother has passed away now and I always wanted her to see you but I could never get in touch with you, well I never knew how. I want to know more about you and her cause that really meant so much to me cause when ever she talked about you she always had a glow in her eyes that made me feel that there was somthing special between you and her. I hope you will ans!
wer my call and write me back and let me know more if it's not asking for too much. I much say im sorry if have harmed you in any way for writing something like this I'm oh so sorry. I thank you so much and may god bless you in many ways.
Stephanie Strudwick 2004-01-20
