BURNE HOGARTH

1911 - 1996

Viime vuosisadan suuriin vaikuttajiin sarjakuvan ja kuvakerronnan alueella kuuluu ehdottomasti Tarzan sarjakuvasankarin ehdoton piirtäjä Burne Hogarth.
Itse luen Hogarthin samaan kastiin Harold R. Fosterin (Prinssi Rohkea) ja Alex Raymondin (Flash Gordon, Rip Kirby jne.) kanssa. Kuitenkin juuri Hogarthista muodostui minulle se varsinainen keräilykohde. Olen etsiskellyt hänen töitään pitkälti yli toistakymmentä vuotta. Valitettavasti hyvin monet hänen töistään on hinnoiteltu sen verran hyvin ettei niitä kaikkia ole mahdollisuuksia hankkia.
During the first half of the last century there were some artists whose contribution to the field cannot be exceeded. These artists include, among others,  Harold R. Foster (Prince Valiant), Burne Hogarth (Tarzan) and Alex Raymond  (Flash Gordon). Burne Hogarth somehow became one of my all time favorites. I have been searching his (reasonably priced) works as far as I can remember. Many of the items I have been forced to forget due to their heavy price.

Burne Hogarth muistetaan parhaiten hänen uskomattomasta visiostaan Edgar Rice Burroughsin Tarzanista. Hän piirsi Tarzan sunnuntaisivuja vuodesta 1937 vuoteen 1950. Hänen vähemmin tunnettuihin mutta jossain suhteessa myös parhaimpiinsa kuuluva sarjakuva on Drago (1945-1946) jonka julkaiseminen jäi yhteen kertomukseen. Dragoa ei ole vielä toistaiseksi julkaistu suomeksi. Englanniksi on julkaistu ainakin yksi mustavalkoinen kokoelma (Pasific Comics Club). Ainoastaan yksi värijulkaisu on tiettävästi ikinä julkaistu, valitettavasti vain tuo espanjankielinen teos on uudelleen väritetty.
Burne Hogarth is remembered best from his vision of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan (Illustrator of Tarzan sunday pages 1937-1950). However I like at least as much about Drago (1945-1946). Unfortunately Drago has never been published in Finnish. In English there is one black & white version from Pasific Comics Club. The colour version has been published only in Europe (Spain) as far as I know. This book contains however modern colours.

Tarzan proof. Burne Hogarthin käsinväritetty sunnuntaisivun proof kopio (katso kuva).

Tarzan hand coloured proof (see picture). This sample is originally from the collection of Danton Burroughs. Danton Burroughs (grandson of Edgar Rice Burroughs, died 2008)) got this directly from Burne Hogarth.  There are not many of them around because of the fire that occurred at Danton's house which destroyed most of them.  In addition, shortly after this fire, Danton passed away (some think due to the stress of losing a lot of his father's and grandfather's personal effects) so there is no more access to any of them should some have survived.

Burne Hogarth hand-colored also several original Sunday pages by the request of Danton Burroughs. 17 of these were made by Hogarth. These are considered to be Hogarth’s best work ever by many collectors. Occasionally some of these originals are seen sold at auctions in very heavy price.

Suomessa harvinaisin Hogarth julkaisu näyttää olevan Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972:1.
The rarest of the Hogarth’s books published in Finland seems to be “Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972:1”. This comic book is commonly mixed with the book “Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972” and there are comic book collectors that doesn’t even know the existence of this book.
The differencies are as follows.

·     Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972, Williams 1971, taide: Russ Manning, kansi: Burne Hogarth, yleinen. Hinta liikkuu 5-15 euron tienoilla (estimaatti vuodelle 2009). Luullaan usein numeroksi 1972:1 vaikka on itse asiassa vuosijulkaisu loppuvuodelta 1971. Tuohon aikaan oli yleistä laittaa markkinoille erikoisnumeroita/vuosikirjoja seuraavan vuoden ”vuosileimalla”.

Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972, Williams 1971, art by Russ Manning, cover by Burne Hogarth, common. Price estimation for VF copy around 5-15 e (estimation made 2009). Often mistakingly considered to be number 1972:1 but is actually from late 1971. At that time it was really common to put the next years marking into the yearbooks cover even if the book itself was published late in the previous year.

·     Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972:1, Williams 1972, Taide: Burne Hogarth, kansi: taiteilija tuntematon, erittäin harvinainen. Keräilymarkkinoilla hinta-arvio liikkuu 50 - 80 euron tienoilla (estimaatti vuodelle 2009). Tarkkaa hintaa on vaikea määritellä koska kirjaa on erittäin harvoin saatavilla.

Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero 1972:1, Williams 1972, Art by Burne Hogarth, Cover by ?, very rare. Price estimation for VF copy around 50 - 80 e (estimation made 2009).

Myöhemmällä ajalla Hogarth on tehnyt mm. kaksi Tarzan kirjaa, useita how-to kirjoja sekä julisteita ja portfolioita.
Later on Hogarth has done two Tarzan comic books, several how-to books and some prints and portfolios.

Seuraavassa on esitetty lista tiedossani olevista suomeksi julkaistuista Hogarthin materiaalista. Kaikki lisäinfo on tervetullutta, erityisesti digitaaliset kuvat.
The following is a short (and incomplete in many parts) compilation of Hogarth’s published material. Because my reference collection is rather small and there seems not to be good resources available, any comments, corrections, information and especially digital pictures about rare items and newspaper strips are very welcome.

Kuinka listaa luetaan:
How to read this list:

Listatut päivämäärät ovat alkuperäisiä julkaisupäiviä amerikkalaisissa sanomalehdissä.
Käännös, kirjan nimi (lyhenne) ja alkuperäinen kirjaan sisällytetty materiaali on merkitty kursiivilla alkuperäisen nimen perään. Yksittäiset, muutetut tai leikatut ruudut on listattu ainoastaan mikäli ne ovat käännetyn tarinan alussa tai lopussa.
Dates are the original dates of the first newspaper appearances in USA. Translations, name of the comic book and the original material included in the stories are marked with italic after the name of the original story. Single, modified and cut panels are listed only if they are in the beginning or in the end of the published material.

Suomalaisten kirjojen nimissä on käytetty seuraavia lyhenteitä:
Abbreviations of Finnish Tarzan comic books used in the text are as follows:

TSEN = Tarzan suuri erikoisnumero
TJK = Tarzan jättikirja
TLK = Tarzan lahjakirja

Tähti (*) tarkoittaa että tarinaa on pahoin joko uudelleenväritetty, uudelleenjärjestelty, leikattu tai ruutuja on poistettu. Joissakin tapauksissa kokonaisia sunnuntaisivuja on jätetty välistä pois käytössä olevan sivumäärän rajallisuuden takia.
Star (*) means that stories/panels can be/are partially recolored, redrawn, rearranged or some panels are left out in order to fit the story to the number/size of pages available. In some cases even several hole Sunday pages are left out.

Tarzan päivästripit ja niiden esiintyminen Suomessa - Tarzan daily strips and their appearances in Finland

Hogarth piirsi Tarzan pävittäissarjaa ainoastaan elokuusta joulukuuhun vuonna 1947. Ruutunumerot ovat 2509-2616.
Hogarth drew Tarzan dailies from august to december 1947.

Matka maan uumeniin (TSEN 1973:2) * Colour. No reference material to check the strip numbers included in the translation. However the translation includes also material by other artist so I suppose that all the Hogarth material is at least partially included. The sad thing is that the page layout is very poorly modified to fit into this format and it is more than likely that there are panels or strips left out. The strips are printed in quite large size so the art actually seems quite unprofessional, you could never quess its made by Hogarth (Note: There is also a possibility that some of the art is redrawn by some other “artist”).

Note: Tarzan daily strips were also published in Finnish newspapers (e.g. Helsingin Sanomat) but I have no information did those include also strips by Hogarth. But if so, I would very much like to get at least a scanned [pic]ture about them. But of course I’d rather would like to buy them.

DRAGO – A special note for this magnificent strip

I have collected this magnificent series for some time now (from the early 90’ies). The newspaper Sunday pages are very very rare but they do appear sometimes on Ebay.

The full size pages I have seen on sale only once during the time I have collected these but unfortunately the (Ebay) seller was not willing to sell outside americas (the image above was taken from ebay). The full half pages I have seen sold three times, once in 2003 (a lot of several pages – I actually managed to win these), once in 2004 (a lot of several pages – I actually managed to win these also) and once in spring 2005 (many different pages on sale from one seller but all pages were sold separately).

As of this day (i.e. 7 February, 2006) I have not managed to find any full pages but I do have nearly all full half pages. Currently I’m missing only one page. However that one page seems to be unfortunately somewhere under the rock, or should I say a mountain of rocks.

If you happen to read this page and own Drago pages please do offer them for me. I am not willing to pay any ridiculous amount of money for those but at least for this one missing page I can pay well.

The missing full half page is as follows:

Burne Hogarth sculpted a medal to be affixed to the front of the first 150 leather bound slip cased Portfolios. The first three medallions were done from in silver as the first three Portfolios were to be the recipients of .999 solid silver striking. The rest were meant to be released with the solid bronze medallion. Each medallion is numbered in the edge from 1 to 150. The publication of these leatherbound slipcases newer realized. The medallions were sold separately.

·     Bullfighter print, Blackthorne 1985, S/N 250, 69 x 42 cm, colour, first and only in a discontinued series of  fine art prints.

·     Drago, Pasific Comics Club 1985, probably the only complete collection of  Drago in English, b/w.

·     The Life of King Arthur print 1: The Education of Arthur, Blackthorne 1986, S&N 250, 89 x 59 cm, first plate from portfolio 1 as signed and numbered limited edition print.

·     The Life of King Arthur print 2: Arthur Draws the Sword from the Stone, Blackthorne 1986, S&N 250, 59 x 89 cm, second plate from portfolio 1 as signed and numbered limited edition print (print series was discontinued after this second release).

·     Tarzan 1-6 (Sammlerausgabe, Hethke Comic Top Collection), Norbert Hethke Verlag 1988-1989. Publishing year still to be confirmed. Softcover. Volumes 1 through 3 collecting Tarzan of the Apes in colour, volumes 4 through 6 collecting Jungle Tales of Tarzan in colour. Jungle Tales of Tarzan colouring identical to a 1983 edition from Arnoldo Mondadori.

·     The Arcane Eye of Hogarth, Fantagraphics 1992, SC/HC/HC S&N 300, sketchbook, 2-colour.

·     The Life of King Arthur portfolio 1, Norbert Hethke Verlag 1993, S&N 500 (1100 worldwide), 40 x 50 cm, 5 colour and one b/w plate in an illustrated folder, illustrated tipped-in signature plate, same as portfolio 1 from 1983 except in colour and larger size. In my own opinion this is one of the best Hogarth items ever published. This is actually rather special publication. Upon publication I saw this portfolio for sale in only one source in united states, Fantagraphics books catalog. At that time it has rather heavy price of 125 us dollars. After that I have not seen a copy for sale anywhere. It would be interesting to see what prices this item would command if offered for sale. After buying one for myself from Fantagraphics books I asked from the publisher is there a follow-up planned for this but it seems that only Portfolio 1 was published in Germany as oversized colour edition. This edition published in united states was signed and limited to 500.

In Germany there were a similar edition published. Also signed and numbered from an edition of 500. This edition was named as Das Leben König Arthur portfolio I. Otherwise the edition is identical to the one sold in United States. The remaining 100 copies of the total 1100 are not yet identified but could well be AP copies or similar.

·     Morphos the Shapechanger, Dark Horse 1996, colour, text: Harry Hurwitz, Hogarth died before he could make the story complete. (originally planned as 4-part series), the script for the rest of  the story is included in the book.

·     Hogarth Tarzan Statue, Graphitti Designs 1997, bronze edition limited to 50 statues and cold cast edition to 500. The bronze edition had the retail price of USD 3900 while the cold cast version carried the price tag of USD 295. This is the first official Tarzan statue, cold cast version of the statue is not coloured as such but includes an “earthly colouring”, designed by Hogarth with Joe DeVito, this statue took 3 years in making. Released after Hogarth’s death. I was a little bit dissappointed with the colouring (or the lack of it) but anyway this is a very fine statue which will be appreciated and valued in the future. The bronze edition was far too expensive for me to get but it looks really great in the pictures. I have a repainted regular edition myself. It was painted by a professional artist according as far as could the colours Hogarth used in his Tarzan books and pages. The result is very nice.

·     Tarzan reprint series (NBM) - the best and complete Foster/Hogarth Tarzan reprint series. The signed and numbered editions of this series were also sold to subscribers with matching numbers. I suppose the number of complete series with matching numbers is not commonly known (I have matching numbers of 102/xxx). The dust jackets (and also the cloth cover) of the limited editions includes a gilt notice marking the limited edition. Limited edition books are signed on the special signature page and are bound in real cloth (regular editions are not bound in real cloth).  Softcover editions of this 18-part series were also planned (as 9-part softcover series starting 1997). In this series one softcover should collect the material of two hardcover books. Only the first two softcover books in this series were published. The only information about the printing sizes was obtained from ebay listing and it is not confirmed. However the informed and not confirmed numbers were as follows: volumes 1-14 2000 copies printed, volumes 15-18 500 copies printed.

·     The Golden Age of Tarzan 1939-1942, Chelsea House 1977, facsimile edition, signed and numbered from an edition of 2000. Russ Cochran produced also Sunday page black & white print (on heavy paper) to accompany the very few copies of this book he sold. This print was also signed and numbered (number marked /1000) and contained the same number as in the book it accompanied. The print came folded. The edition with the print is extremely hard to find. I have noticed that the price for this item in VF/NM goes around 300-500 us dollars. The book with the print command prices about 100 dollar higher than the book without (estimation made 2009).
