How to learn and teach TRIZ?

In the December issue of The TRIZ Journal was published Kalevi Rantanen´s article A Personal View on
Savransky´s Book. The article was soon re-posted in TRIZ Home Page in Japan (English). The Japanese Page
contains also correspondence and earlier publications related to the topic of the article. The main point of the
article: the study and teaching should begin from basic concepts: contradiction, resources, ideality and the
patterns of evolution.

Cork workshop on TRIZ and Food Industry

Developing Systematic Innovation for Food Technology workshop was held in Cork, Ireland, November 26-28, 2000.
The workshop brought together experts in TRIZ & systematic innovation and food researchers
and industrialists. The organizer and initiator of the workshop was Prof. Jorge Oliveira from University College Cork.

TRIZ experts considered following topics:
- Basic concepts of TRIZ (Kalevi Rantanen, TRIS Oy, Finland)
- Systematic Innovation in Food Technology (Ellen Domb, PGR Group, USA)
- TRIZ for non-technical problems (Veit Kohnhauser, BMW Engines, Austria)
- Using contradictions for gaining orientation (H. Linde, A. Rekhlau, U. Neumann, Univ. Applied
Sciences of Coburg, Germany) - TechOptimizer (Derek Kilroe, Invention Machine Corp., U.K.)

Experts on systematic innovation and food research spoke of following themes:
- Robust multicriteria analysis or innovation processes (Jean Renaud, ENSGSI, INPL, France)
- A cost-effective innovation cycle (Sean McCarthy, Hyperion, Ireland)
- The potential of systematic innovation in the Irish Food Industry (Barry Winkless, University College Cork, Ireland)

The implementation of TRIZ in food industry was discussed in groups. Then the workshop committee made
a critical analysis of the group discussions.

Some ideas discussed:
- Workshop-style learning + research initiative of a small focused group
- Case study on a specific product development problem
- Case study "catering quantity versus home quality"

TRIS Oy has developed a new basic course on TRIZ. Features:
1 Focus on rather few basic concepts (contradiction, resources, ideal final result)
instead of long many-step instructions and "algorithms"
2 Theory is emphasized instead of ready instructions and checklists, like standards
and 40 principles. User feedback has shown that good theory is more practical and
economical than, say, isolated principles and standards without theoretical background.
3 Theory (concepts of TRIZ) are taught first, TRIZ related software second. A five day
course does not yet contain training in SW use at all. Theory helps to use SW more than
instructions what radio button to press. After theoretical training one can easily
acquire SW.
4 The contents on course is based on TRIZ, and didactical planning on cognitive psychology
that guarantees good learning results.
The course is conducted by Kalevi Rantanen, TRIS Oy.

"A maker of fibreglass-impregnated roofing shingles used
our software to analyse his 66-step process, which is both
well defined and "relatively" efficient, based on existing
methods used in his industry. Our analysis showed that 49%
(or 32 steps) of his process was either UNNECESSARY OR
HARMFUL. Most of the concepts TOPE generated to solve his
problems came from the textile industry, as well as some from
submarine propeller design... An intriguing solution showed him how
to extrude fibreglass WITHOUT AN EXTRUDER..."
