Q-bevel and Q-SMSbevel

HowTo - Q-bevel

Select the polygons you wish to bevel, and run Q-bevel script. The following requester will appear.

Here's what the settings do:

1. Bevel size

This sets the size of the resulting bevel. I.e. in normal mode, setting of 10mm will create a round bevel with 10mm shift, 10mm inset. When bevel type is set to something else than normal, this sets the size of a single Q-bevel operation - i.e. with [2* (S)], two 10mm Q-bevels would be created.

2. Number of Bevels

This sets the number of iterations in each Q-bevel operation.

3.  Bevel type

[Normal] creates one "90 degree" round Q-bevel.  [2* (S)] creates two Q-bevels, in an S shape (i.e. Convex up + Concave up). [2* YU] creates two bevels, but changes the direction between them (i.e. Convex down + Convex up). Finally, [4* (o)] creates four bevels, resulting in a ring (o) shape. This option is useful for i.e. creating trusses, or other kinds of support structures. It's easies done than said - just try it ;-)

As a sidenote, i've never been a big fan of icons. But, in some future version, these buttons will be replaced with icon representations of the bevel types (this is a feature that became available to LScript with LW 7.5b, but i haven't implemented it yet).

4. Edge

Convex will create, uhm, a convex Q-bevel. For example, creating a convex Q-bevel to one polygon in a box will make it smoothly round the corners. On the other hand, concave Q-bevel would create a smooth transition from ground up. As a rule of thumb, concave will generate a smooth transition when the surrounding polygons face the same direction as the polygon you apply Q-bevel to.

5. Bevel direction

Does what it says - will make the bevel go either up or down...

6. Add extra start / end bevels

Checking these may help preventing smoothing errors in some situations. Think of it as restricting the smoothing to Q-beveled polygons only.

7. Start / end %

These settings will allow you to skip some of the beveling steps created by Q-bevel. I.e. to make a round edged box, you would set the start to 50%.

8. Use original surface for edge / bevel

Checking these option will preserve the surface names for the selected polygons.  Alternative is to manually give a new name for the edge and beveled polygons.
