Puppy care

Bulldog puppies love tug toys

Bulldogs have big mouths and strong jaws. Some bulldogs also have really strong teeth very suitable for destroying furniture and other valuable things at home. The bulldog puppy likes to sink his sharp teeth into people's toes, trouser legs, table cloth hems and just anything interesting that hanging in front of him. Shoes are a special treat of many dogs. It is not wise to leave shoes around at home when the puppy is young.

Ttug toys are good for the bulldog puppy. His natural play is linked to his original purpose of bull fighting. Playing with tug toys resembles the bulldog teasing the bull and hanging from the bull's muzzle. Playing with tug toys is also very good fror the bulldog's teeth.

It is recommended to give a bulldog knot bones or pig ears as he might suffocate while eating them. The puppy can eat big pressed bones or marrow bones, but he should never be left alone with the bone. One can also give rubber bones or other toys for the puppy to chew as long as they don't contain any parts that might fall of. One should also keep in mind that the bulldog can be allergic to rubber.

Bulldog puppies also like playing with balls. It is nor a bad idea to buy the puppy a football of his own. Also various stimulus toys are good as they help the puppy to unload his energy in a better way than just playing with toys that one pulls or worrys. The puppy can also be taught to find hidden dog treats. This is something that also grown-up bulldogs like to do.

The bulldog puppy should have enough space to move also when he is left alone at home. Putting the puppy into a cage, a closet or the toilet is not accpeted by the Animal Protection Law of Finland, and it certainly does not promote the puppy's growth to a balanced bulldog. If the puppy gnaws various things, it is wiser to buy shield fences ja to put the best furniture away for the worst gnawing period. Some people buy their bulldogs a lounge chair or other piece of furniture of his own, that he can gnaw when he wants to.

The puppy's owner should be careful with electric wires, wall sockets and objects with parts that might fall of. It is wise to cover wall sockets when the puppy is alone at home.

It is not easy to train the bulldog as he is a very wise and comfort-loving companion dog. However it is wise to teach the bulldog some basic things as not no drag while walking in the lead and come to his owner when he calls. If the owner has the patience, he can attend dog training courses with his bulldog puppy. One should not be disappointed if the results are not as good as expected. Bulldogs can be very obstinate, it is a part of their charm!

Training dogs is not easy as the logic of a dog and the human being function in a very different way. People very often train their dogs by "rewarding" the wrong kind of behavior. For example, if one trains the puppy in such a way that always when the puppy is about to sink his teeth into some object one says "no" and gives the puppy a dog treat when he stops the bad behavior, what does one teach the puppy? One actually teachs him to sink his teeth to all possible objects in order to get treats.
